Overview
Chenjiagou Taijiquan School
Chen Village is a small rural community in Henan Province that happens to be the origin point of one of the world's most widely practiced martial arts. Tai Chi Chuan was developed here by the Chen family in the 17th century, and the village remains the center of serious Chen-style practice.
Training at Chenjiagou means learning from instructors who carry direct family lineage — not students of students of students, but members of the Chen family itself and their closest disciples. For anyone serious about Chen Tai Chi specifically, this is as authentic as it gets.
Training
The curriculum focuses exclusively on Chen-style Tai Chi: the traditional forms, push hands (tui shou), and Tai Chi weapons including sword, broadsword, and staff. Chen-style is more physically demanding than the Yang-style Tai Chi most Westerners encounter — it incorporates explosive power (fa jin), low stances, and vigorous conditioning alongside the flowing movements.
Training typically runs 4–5 hours per day. The pace is determined by the instructor and will feel slow to students accustomed to external styles — this is intentional. Chen Tai Chi rewards patience and careful attention to detail over speed.
Practical Considerations
English support is limited. Most instruction happens through demonstration and physical correction rather than verbal explanation. Students with some Mandarin will have a significantly easier time, but determined students with no Chinese have completed programs here successfully.
The village setting is genuinely rural. This is not a polished tourist facility — it's a working training environment in a small Chinese village. Students who embrace this find it adds to the authenticity of the experience. Students expecting modern amenities will struggle.
Who This School Suits
Chenjiagou is ideal for students who are specifically serious about Chen-style Tai Chi and willing to prioritize authenticity over comfort and convenience. It is not a good first school for someone new to China or new to martial arts — the limited English support and rural setting require a degree of independence and adaptability.
For an experienced practitioner who wants to study at the source, there is nowhere better.
