Overview

Wudang Mountain Kung Fu Academy

Training at Wudang Mountain puts you inside one of the most significant sites in Chinese martial arts history. The mountain has been a center of Taoist practice for over a thousand years, and the internal arts taught here — Tai Chi, Bagua, and Wudang sword — have been practiced in this environment continuously for centuries.

The school is located near Nanyan Palace, one of the mountain's most dramatic cliff-side temple complexes. Early morning training with mist moving through the mountain valleys is an experience students consistently describe as unlike anything else.

Training

The focus here is on internal arts — Wudang Tai Chi, Bagua Zhang, Xing Yi, and Wudang sword. Do not come expecting the explosive physicality of Shaolin training. The internal arts require a different kind of effort: learning to release tension, correct postural habits, and develop sensitivity that takes patience to cultivate.

Training sessions run approximately 5–6 hours per day. Meditation and Taoist philosophy are integrated into the curriculum alongside physical practice, which makes this school particularly suited to students interested in the broader cultural and spiritual dimensions of Chinese martial arts.

Class sizes are capped at 10 students, which means significantly more instructor attention than most schools can offer.

Accommodation and Food

Students live on-site within the scenic zone. Accommodation is simple but adequate. The mountain environment means cooler temperatures than much of China — bring appropriate clothing regardless of what season you visit.

Who This School Suits

Wudang Mountain Academy is well-suited to students who are drawn to internal arts, meditation, and Taoist philosophy. It also works well for older students or those with physical limitations who want genuine martial arts training without the punishing physical demands of Shaolin-style schools.

Students looking for high-intensity physical conditioning, competitive sparring, or primarily external styles should look elsewhere.

Pricing

Monthly fees run approximately $1,200–$1,400 including accommodation and meals. This is at the higher end of the market, reflecting the location and small class sizes.

Information last reviewed January 2026. Verify current pricing and visa procedures directly with the school before booking.

Editor's notes

One of the most atmospheric training locations in China. Located inside the UNESCO heritage zone. Maximum 10 students per group means genuinely personal instruction. Higher price reflects the location and small class sizes.

Student experiences

Training was simple, repetitive, and much harder than expected in the first two weeks.
The best results came after asking very specific questions before sending a deposit.
